Title: Online Data and Scientific Progress: Content in Cyberinfrastructure.

The “scientific method” is changing from “hypothesize, design and run experiment, analyze results” to “hypothesize, look up answer in data base”. Molecular biology has been leading, but astronomy is right behind it and the earth sciences are growing fast (they have a petabyte of data online).

Michael Lesk is a leading authority on Digital Libraries and Digital Preservation. He is author of the book “Practical Digital Libraries: Books, Bytes and Bucks.” His academic career staretd with his work for the SMART project, in which he wrote much of their retrieval code and did many of the retrieval experiments, as well as obtaining a PhD in Chemical Physics. In the 1970’s he worked in the group that built Unix and wrote Unix tools for word processing (tbl, refer), compiling (lex), and networking (uucp). In the 1980’s he worked on specific information systems applications, mostly with geography (a system for driving directions) and dictionaries (a system for disambiguating words in context), as well as running a research group at Bellcore. And in the 1990s he worked on a large chemical information system, the CORE project, with Cornell, OCLC, ACS and CAS. From 1998-2002 he was head of the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems at the National Science Foundation. Currently he is on the faculty of the Library and Information Science Department, SCILS (School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies), Rutgers University. He received the “Flame” award for lifetime achievement from Usenix in 1994, and is a Fellow of the ACM.

Nach dem Seminar/Workshop in Lissabon kann ich sogleich die nächste (zeitlich aber frühere) Veranstaltung von ERPANET ankündigen, den Workshop zu Trusted Digital Repositories, Rom, 17.-19. November 2003.
Ein kurzer Ueberblick über das Programm:

• opening: 17th November 9:30
• an examination of the issues related to quality standards for creating digital resources in different technological, format domains (texts, databases, audiovisual, imaging, multimedia), and disciplines. Especially where these issues impact on the development and delivery of digital repositories.
• achieving the maximum potential scientific, economic and social benefits from public investments in organising and maintaining a long-term digital repositories, specifically by defining the nature of the actions required for capture
• examining policies, methods and procedures required for storage repositories with a special focus on design/implementation, documentation and metadata definition, workflow model, preservation strategies and tools, certification and auditing
• successfully implementing scientific, technical, management, and policy considerations
• exploring perspectives across different disciplines, emerging technologies and applications via case studies

ERPANET führt zusammen mit CODATA, dem Committee on Data for Science and Technology, vom 15. bis zum 17. Dezember 2003 einen Seminar-Workshop durch zum Thema “Selection, Appraisal and Retention of Scientific Data”. ERPANET macht mit dieser Veranstaltung einen weiteren Schritt in Richtung seines Zieles, den Erfahrungsaustausch und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen allen an der digitalen Archivierung Interessierten zu fördern. ERPANET is pleased to announce its participation in IFLA 2003. It will participate:

* in the IFLA Workshop on the Information Technology and Preservation and Conservation on the 7th of August 2003; and,
* by presenting at the European Commission’s DigiCULT Stand on Wednesday the 6th of August 2003.

IFLA Workshop—Topic & Programme

The overall theme of IFLA 2003 is Access Point Library: Media – Information – Culture. ERPANET Director Dr. Seamus Ross will participate in a collaborative workshop featuring presentations by international digital preservation specialists.

Presentation at DigiCULT Stand

His presentation at the DigiCULT stand will describe ERPANET ‘s achievements and services. The presentation will conclude with a discussion with participants about the ways they can benefit from and contribute to the work of ERPANET.
The presentation will take place on Wednesday the 6th of August 2003 between 11 am and 12 pm. The European Commission’s DigiCULT Stand 61-64 is located in Hall 2.
