Film gegen Kulturvandalismus

“For those who have neither seen or heard of it, the British made-for-TV production of SHOOTING THE PAST has finally been released on DVD in North America by BBC Warner.

The story centres around the closure of a library that houses a vast collection of historical photographs. The archive has just been acquired by an American company, who intend to convert the building into a business school, and a stuffy bureaucrat is sent ahead to salvage only the “most important” images, and junk the rest. The existing management and staff — totally unaware of the change in ownership — desperately plead their case to preserve the entire collection.

The pacing of the production is leisurely, but it lends to the story. In particular, a very moving scene in which a series of innocuous pictures and presented together to help reveal a little piece of bureaucrat’s past.

This is one of the finest stories ever told about the work of archivists (though the Timothy Spall character is certainly on the extreme side of “eccentric”), and just a damn good production in general. I recommend it, not for material gain, but merely for personal interest. It was after watching it, about 7 years ago, that I sought out AMIA and joined this mailing list.
