“The President of the Society of American Archivists, Peter Gottlieb, sent a message to the Archives & Archivists listerv today, stating:
SAA Council will discuss the conditions of archives in Haiti at its meeting next week in Washington DC. Although the emergency in Haiti does not appear on the meeting agenda that has been posted at the SAA website, the Executive Committee will be reviewing the most current information about Haitian archives when it meets on Monday evening, February 1, and will be requesting that the situation in Haiti be added to Council’s agenda.
In addition, Maygene Daniels will represent SAA at a meeting of the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield member organizations in Washington on Friday, February 5th. The Committee is a non-profit organization that protects cultural property around the world during armed conflicts and other emergencies. Ms. Daniels is a past president and Fellow of the Society of American Archivists.
Through these efforts, SAA is seeking the most effective ways that it can assist the archives in Haiti. Information from Council’s discussions and from the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield will be distributed as soon as possible. “
